This rings a bell. I was a Georgia Tech Cooperative Education student at NASA MFSC (Huntsville, AL) during the Apollo and Skylab projects, while on my work assignments. I was assigned to the engineering and mockup lab, and to the engineer designing the toilet unit for Skylab. The Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) - the "spacesuit", used on the moon including inner and outer layers and life support weighed about 180 pounds. Skylab's was similar. Before Skylab, human waste was collected in bags and "diapers". Engineering systems for human waste is one of the major challenges. This image is very, very funny to me.

Artist's Description

Two astronauts in full space suits are standing in a tiled bathroom, giving the scene a surreal feel. One is at the sink, possibly washing hands, while the other is facing away from the viewer, possibly in line for the sink, creating a juxtaposition of mundane activity with the extraordinary occupation of the figures.

About Scott Listfield

Scott Listfield

I paint astronauts and, sometimes, dinosaurs. Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey was released in 1968, which was about 8 years before I was born, so I have no firsthand knowledge of how it was received. I do not know if people genuinely believed we'd be living in space in 2001. If we'd have robot butlers and flying cars, geodesic lunar homes with sustainable gardens, and genetically reconstituted dinosaurs helping or eating the human population. But from Lost in Space to the Jetsons to Jurassic Park, it seems that popular culture craved and fomented this space-age perception of the future. Generations raised on these programs, movies, comic books, and novels are now grown and living in a future filled with mini vans, Starbucks,...
